” Red Sky at Morning is a small marvel: it is a book of paradox, of identity, of a frustrating YES to life that accepts with marvel what we are happy to call the human condition. In other words, an artwork.

“– Harper Lee Hailed by the Washington Post Book World as “a sort of Catcher in the Rye out West,” Richard Bradford’s Red Sky at Morning is the timeless coming-of-age story set throughout World War II about the sustaining spirit of youth and the worths in life that count.

In the summer season of 1944, Frank Arnold, a rich shipbuilder in Mobile, Alabama, gets his volunteer commission in the U.S. Navy and moves his spouse, Ann, and seventeen-year-old boy, Josh, to the household’s summer season house in the town of Corazon Sagrado, high in the New Mexico mountains.

A real child of the Confederacy, Ann discovers it difficult to handle the lifestyle in the mainly Hispanic town and, in the business of Jimbob Buel– an unbearable, South-proud, expert houseguest– requires to bridge and sherry.

Josh, on the other hand, ends up being an important member of the Sagrado neighborhood, creating relationships with his brand-new schoolmates, with the town’s unethical resident artist, and with Amadeo and Excilda Montoya, the couple employed by his dad to take care of their home.

Josh tells the story of his eventful year in Sagrado and, with irresistibly deadpan, profane humor, explains the occasions and individuals who affect his development to maturity. Unrestricted by his mom’s ridicule for these “ugly, dirty little Westerners,” Josh enters into his own and into a boy’s carefully formed understanding of responsibility, obligation, and love.
