International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration ( IAST) is a transliteration plan that enables the lossless romanisation of Indic scripts as utilized by Sanskrit and associated Indic languages. It is based upon a plan that emerged throughout the 19th century from recommendations by Charles Trevelyan, William Jones, Monier Monier-Williams and other scholars, and formalised by the Transliteration Committee of the Geneva Oriental Congress, in September 1894.[1] IAST makes it possible for the reader to check out the Indic text unambiguously, precisely as if it remained in the initial Indic script. It is this loyalty to the initial scripts that represents its continuing appeal among scholars.
