Made Local: Mark Oppenheimer

In discussion with Eric Ackland, Owner of Amazing Books and Record.

Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, is among the earliest Jewish communities in the nation, understood for its tight-knit neighborhood and the abundance of multigenerational households. On October 27, 2018, a shooter eliminated eleven Jews who were worshipping at the Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill– the most lethal anti-Semitic attack in American history.

Mark Oppenheimer poignantly moves the focus far from the criminal and his criminal activity, and rather provides the historical, perky neighborhood at the center of this heartbreak. He speaks to homeowners and nonresidents, Jews and gentiles, survivors and witnesses, teens and senior citizens, activists and historians. Together, these stories offer a kaleidoscopic and nuanced account of cumulative sorrow, love, assistance, and revival.
