In a talk being conducted by Dr Malik M Mukhtar, #epidemiologist & head of National AIDS Control Program in #Pakistan some alarming details were brought to light. He shared some eyebrow raising facts about the status of #HIV AIDS in Pakistan. I’d share some with my #fb audience:
– Pakistan’s present standing in world AIDS ranking is #5, which is indeed alarming.
– 1 in 10 #Pakistani suffer form Hep B &/or C, which means that in population of 21crore (as per recent census), upto 2crore people suffer form Hep B &/or Hep C. Both these forms of #hepatitis have a similar mode of transmission as AIDS.
– Somehow 22lac Pakistani are HIV +ve, which is a mistaken statistics, #AIDS is under reported in Pakistan. And this under reported figure arises from the fact that people (at risk or not at risk) aren’t willing to undergo HIV screening, owing to the stigma attached to the illness. There are more than 1crore 80 lac Pakistani suffering from HIV. They are out there, waiting in oblivion, transmitting HIV to non HIV individuals.
– #Gulf countries deport anyone who’s found HIV +ve, & Pakistani army expel the armed personnels if found HIV +ve.
– Out of 22lac reported HIV cases, 6,600 are in #Karachi and
Karachi is leading in 🇵🇰 when it comes to HIV cases, because being a metropolis it provides an easy access to red light area, a gay community, transgenders, drug addicts.
– an estimated 65 lac drug users are there in Pakistan & smoking cigarettes is the initiation of a person into the euphoric world of drugs, predisposing him/her to use IV mode for injecting a drug into his blood, whereby he/she shares a hypodermic needle & ends up with HIV.
– In #Larkana 60 people got HIV from dialysis, where unscreend blood was transfued into dialysis patients. Such extreme medical negligence went Scott free in Pakistan because the blood banks involved in supplying that un screened blood to Larkana hospital were owned by MNAs sitting in parliament.
– 2 crore Pakistani are in foreign, while away form wife & family they often engage in unprotected sex and bring HIV to homeland.
– Pakistan, Phillipines & Indonesia have a high rise of HIV+, it’s alarming that 2 of these countries are declared #muslim states.
– Ask your doctor for oral substitute (if available) over IV injection for any prescribed injection.
– Avoid promiscuous behavior
– keep in mind, PKR 10lac /year are the expenses per HIV Patient. Management & treatment is way more expensive than #prevention
